Why Tomatoes Remind Me of Dad

Does a particular person or memory come to mind when you come across a specific scent? According to fifthsense.org, “the sense of smell is closely linked with memory, probably more so than any of our other senses. [Some] may be able to think of smells that evoke particular memories.”

When I smell tomatoes on a vine, I think of my father. He has such a green thumb! I recall our small enclosed patio of my childhood home being completely overcome with fruits & vegetables! One of the more fragrant scents were that of the tomatoes my father grew! Still to this day, my talented father comes to mind when I buy tomatoes on the vine- That’s right, I buy my vegetables! Apparently, I didn’t inherit the art of gardening from Dad!

This video by SciShow goes into WHY smells trigger memories & emotions! And did you know that the memories & sensations that come flooding back are often of your earlier life, before you were 10yrs old? Pretty neat, right?

So, what about you? What is that one smell that makes you think of Uncle Frank or that one Fourth of July? We’d love to hear from you in the comments!
